  Newport Market

Over a period of two years Architectural Products, in partnership with Solaglas (www.saint-gobain-glass.com) of Bristol, were in discussions with architect’s, planners and contractors to assist in improving the environment for the traders of the old market hall. The existing patent glazing, itself installed as part of a refurbishment some 20 years ago had become a danger to the public with glass slipping from its retaining bars.

During refurbishment the market hall had to remain open to the public so the logistics of the project set a challenge for all concerned. Due to the age of the building very little extra loading was allowed on the roof structure so scaffolding and protection had to be kept to a minimum. Each area was boarded out and protected separately, the existing glazing stripped out to the extent of which the fixers were sure that they could install the new glazing before the end of each day so no area was left uncovered.

The PRW glazing system with its snap on retaining wings gave the fixers some necessary flexibility with tolerances of the old structure and provided ease of installation that allowed them to close each area before the days end. With the exception of the vertical area Solaglas supplied all of the 7mm pyroshield textured safety glass cut to size in phased deliveries to suit the site progress. In a ten week period all of the patent glazing had been replaced like for like.

The only exception to the like for like rule being the barrel vault vertical end where the architect wanted to add a splash of colour. Each individual pane, that due to the timescale had to be calculated by Architectural Products, was cut and screen-printed by Proto Studios of London. With the expense of each pane of glass this area proved to be one nerve-racking jigsaw.
